1) Look unhealthy
Change the water for keeping planarians ("planarian water").
Do you use tap water which is from the tap directly? The water from the tap is chlorinated and contain chlorine. The chlorine is bad for planarians.
Do you use pure water? Planarians can not live in water containing no minerals.
You must use boiled water (or autoclaved water) or bottled drinking water.
| 2) Don't regenerate |
You may be using the wrong water. You must check the planarian water referring to '1) Look unhealthy'.
If planarians are kept at low temperature, their regeneration is slower than at room temperature. Change the temperature at which you keep them (it should be 24 degrees or below) or wait for some time.
If you cut them into too small pieces, planarians can not regenerate.
Some kinds of planarians' tail piece can not regenerate. The farther from the planarian's head, the lower the regeneration ability.
3) Don't move
When you shake or knock the tub in which the planarians are kept, if the planarians move, they are fine. If the planarians don't move and become rounded, their condition is bad. Change the water quickly.
4) Whether dead or not
Planarians which swim upside down on the water's surface aren't dead. When planarians die, their carcasses are like debris or disappear. If you see immobile planarians, there are two possibilities: no problem or very bad . Carefully observe the planarians' behavior.

5) Don't increase
Planarians food may not be enough. Also, you may be using wrong water. If you keep them at low temperature, planarians will not increase but will grow larger.
6) Increase too much
Planarians can not live in dirty water, so it is O.K. to throw them away down the sink. Adjust the amount of food.
7) Someone wants to eat them
They taste bitter, I have heard (I have never eaten them).
